We are the change generation; the generation that votes with our ballot and with our dollar. We have the power to ignite international change with the use of social media platforms, and while it is astonishing that we can influence the world to do better, we must start with ourselves by relearning what we know about environmental injustice.
To make a difference for this Earth, we must not only look to the ocean but to our closets, bathrooms and bank statements. Are we purchasing from sustainable businesses? Are the companies we support actively making a positive impact for our planet’s future? Here is a list of companies where you can purchase sustainable apparel and cosmetics.
Pact — Clothing
Pact claims to be “Earth’s favorite clothing.” The brand, whose namesake is a promise to the people and to the planet, sells simple clothing pieces in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Alongside typical clothing pieces, it also sells maternity clothing and undergarments. Pact is Global Organic Textile Standard certified 100% organic cotton as well as Fair Trade certified. Pact CEO Brendan Synnott was a cast member on season 18 of Survivor and the founder of Bear Naked, an organic granola company. Synnott said in the video posted by Pact, “the fashion industry is the second most toxic industry on the planet … nobody knows where their clothes come from.” With Pact, you know exactly what you’re buying.
Nudi Goods — Cosmetics
Nudi Goods was founded by photographer and activist Jaime Boddorff. All of its products and packaging are completely plastic free. Additionally, the ingredients in its products are few, simple and mostly naturally sourced. Nudi Goods sells 100% biodegradable toxin-free mascara, lip balms, body shimmers, body oils and candles. Nudi Goods is also currently selling 75 cent letters to the offices of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer for the demand of justice for Breonna Taylor. Nudi Goods seeks, advocates for and actively pursues environmental and civil justice.
Happy Earth — Clothing
Happy Earth prioritizes the planet with its motto “Earth First.” Its products are 100% vegan, organically farmed, zero waste packaging and carbon-neutral. Happy Earth is also certified by the World Fair Trade Organization. When purchasing a product, the customer chooses what initiative their purchase impacts. The three impact options are to plant 15 trees, to prevent 150 pounds of Greenhouse Gases or to remove one pound of trash from natural areas. So far, Happy Earth has planted 241,768 trees, prevented 2,805,609 of GHG emissions and removed 2,299 pounds of trash.
