5 Must-Visit Places in Madrid, Spain

BY RENATA WIESE-GARCIA, BLOGGER

I traveled to Madrid, Spain, in 2015 and instantly fell in love with the beautiful city. There is so much life and culture in this city that will keep you wanting to experience more. When I think about Madrid I think about all the history this city has gone through.

You will notice when traveling through the city that it is filled with gorgeous architecture from the past. Madrid is the capital of Spain, located in the Western region of the country. When traveling through Madrid, one should take in all the beauty the city has to offer, from amazing seafood to the beautiful 16th and 17th century architecture. I am originally from the Dominican Republic,  but walking through the streets of Madrid feels like home to me. Although the national language of Madrid is Spanish, the majority of the citizens speak English because it is such a famous tourist location. Here are a few locations you should see when visiting:

Museo del Prado

One of the most popular museums in the world is the Museo del Prado. Here, you will find many pieces such as paintings and ceramics from the renaissance era. Some pieces found here were created by the most famous artists such as Velazquez, El Greco and many more.

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is a  renaissance square created in the 1600s. When walking into Plaza Mayor, tourists will notice the vast amount of restaurants to choose from. I had the most amazing paella, a Spanish seafood dish that is to die for!

El Retiro

This park was definitely one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever walked through. It used to belong to the Spanish royal family until it was opened to the public in the 19th century. El Retiro is filled with beautiful greenery and gardens.

Palacio Real

The Royal Palace of Madrid can be found in the city of Madrid. Although the Spanish royal family does not live here, this is where ceremonies and official functions take place. When standing in front of the palace one will notice that it is massive. The architecture reminds me of Versailles Palace in Paris. I found it absolutely stunning and everyone must see it when traveling through Madrid.

Gran Vía

Gran Vía is translated in English as “Great Way.” When traveling to Madrid, you must stop at Gran Vía. This is definitely a location for shopping addicts. Here, you will find shops, restaurants, cinemas and clubs. During the day, Gran Vía is a great location to shop and really embrace the city. During the night the streets light up with Madrid’s nightclubs. If you really want to take in the city, this should definitely be on your list.
