The artists I chose to feature in the playlist are contemporary musicians that are influencing the evolution of jazz as a genre and expressive art form. Their music combines elements of jazz with other elements from genres such as electronic, funk, classical and R&B . Jazz was created from African American musical traditions and emerged from the combination of ragtime and blues. For a long time, the genre was looked down upon because of the racism that has persisted in the United States. It is now one of the most celebrated genres and is considered “American” but is not truly America’s music. It is the music of struggle and resilience. Here are a few of my favorite artists, enjoy!
