1.  Flying cars

That’s right. We’re officially in the future. In 2020, the military will begin testing its flying car prototypes.

2.  New movies

The start of the decade looks quite promising for new movies. The Fast & Furious franchise will release its ninth film, while heroic women will dominate the screens in MulanBlack Widow and Wonder Woman 1984. In addition, No Time to Die, the 25th installment of the James Bond series, will premiere. The long-awaited sequel to Top GunTop Gun: Maverick, will also hit theaters June.

3.  Met Gala 2020

We LIVE for this glamorous event every year—the fashion and the celebs never fail to blow us away! Meryl Streep will be co-hosting this year, along with co-chairs Nicolas Ghesquière, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emma Stone and Anna Wintour. With the theme entitled, “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” we can definitely expect this year’s event to examine fashion history and how fashion has evolved over the past few centuries.

4.  NASA’s Mars Rover

Can humans feasibly survive on Mars? This unanswered question will continue to unravel itself throughout the next decade. The 2020 Mars rover will launch in between July and August; hopefully, this exhilirating expedition will provide us with answers.

5.  The United States Presidential Election

U.S. politics will be hot and heavy during 2020. With 15 Democrats and three Republicans officially running for presidential office, be sure to read up on the candidates and have yours picked by Nov. 3.

6.  More vegan options

2019 marked the rise of vegan eating choices. This will only continue to grow in 2020 as more diets and menus adjust to normalized vegan eating.

7.  World’s largest archaeological museum

Once completed, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be the largest archaeological museum in the world. Located next to the ancient pyramids of Giza, this museum will display a vast collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including remnants of King Tut’s tomb and the oldest statue of Ramses II.

8.  New decade, new fashion trends

To name a few of the projected trends of 2020:

Leather everywhere. Edgy and deconstructed suits will walk the runway. Puffy, oversized sleeves. Bold prints and patterns from the ‘70s will reappear. Prints will consist of polka dots, houndstooth and geometric linear patterns. And the neon obsession is here to stay.

9.  New albums

2020 will definitely be a great year for music. Pop artists such as Halsey, Kesha and Selena Gomez are all dropping new albums. The Killers and The 1975 will also be releasing new material. On Valentine’s Day, Tame Impala’s fourth LP, The Slow Rush, is slated for release. Culture III by our favorite rap trio, Migos, will also drop this year. Lana Del Rey is rumored to be releasing another album titled White Hot Forever. Our favorite female rappers, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, both have new records on the way for 2020. Father of All…, the upcoming album from Green Day, will be out in February.

10. A lot less plastic, hopefully

The English government has confirmed their initiatives to reduce the sale and use of plastic products. In April 2020, plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds will be completely banned in the country. The global community can certainly look to England’s efforts to minimize litter and pollution of plastic waste as a crucial and attainable goal. Comapnies such as Starbucks, Blue Bottle and IKEA have also vowed to drastically cut their plastic use and production.

11. 2020 Summer Olympics

Tokyo will host the international summer Olympic games of 2020. This is Tokyo’s second time hosting the games, the first time being in 1964. From July 24 to Aug. 9, be ready to watch all the swimming, fencing, surfing, volleyball and table tennis—to name a few. The major goal of the games this upcoming year is to include more youthful events (such as skateboarding and rock climbing) and increase the number of female contestants!

12. It’s a Leap Year

Feb. 29 will be on the calendar in 2020, which gives the year a whole extra day that we only get every four years. How will you be spending the bonus 24 hours?

13. E-commerce continues to thrive

Using paper and coin money will gradually become a thing of the past in 2020; there seems to be a million different ways to pay people electronically today. Mobile apps such as Venmo and Cash App are specifically designed to pay others right from your phone. You can also use Facebook and Apple Pay to instantly send funds from your bank account.

14.  Astronomy gets weird

There’s a bunch of freaky stuff happening in the sky in 2020. From February through May, there will be a series of supermoons where the moon will appear larger than normal. In the summer, Jupiter and Saturn will be very visible. And fortunately, one of the four lunar eclipses in 2020 will occur on the Fourth of July. Additionally, there will be a blue moon on Halloween. Since blue moons are already pretty uncommon and having it occur exactly on the day of Halloween is quite rare, prepare to expect some creepy vibes! We’ll also see a bunch of meteor showers in April, May and August.

15. Super Bowl LIV

The 54th National Football League championship game will take place on Feb. 2. The halftime show, the part we actually watch, will be performed by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

16. Liberia combats deforestation

Liberia will be the first country in the world to completely stop cutting down trees in exchange for developmental aid in 2020. This is a huge step for deforestation, and Norway plans to pay Liberia millions in return.

17. Dubai World Expo

Opening Oct. 20, 2020, this international event focuses on innovation and promoting creative solutions to improve the planet and its people. The theme, “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,” certainly sets the tone for the expo. Sub-themes that will be discussed include sustainability, mobility and opportunity.

18. Women’s March 2020

Early into the year, the fourth annual women’s march will storm Washington. The movement advocates ending violence, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights and workers’ rights. If any of these causes speak to you, you can participate in Washington D.C. on Jan. 18 or one of the sister marches all over the country.

19. The 92nd Academy Awards

Movie buffs get your wine and popcorn ready! From marveling at all the red carpet looks to arguing over which film should get Best Picture, get your viewing party ready for this exciting awards show.

20. New resolutions

A new year calls for new resolutions and a fresh start. Be sure to take the last few days of the decade to contemplate how you wish to start the next one! Make a plan on how to make your resolution attainable so you can follow through!
